About Davos

Davos - Check it out

As the highest city in Europe, Davos is known for its variety of sports, leisure and cultural activities, its relaxing climate, the Davos Ice Hockey Club, the Spengler Cup, the Kirchner Museum, the annual World Economic Forum and the famous freestyle scene on the Jakobshorn.

Originally Davos owes its fame to the relaxing climate, which has been known for more than 160 years. As early as 1860, the first Davos guesthouse was opened to welcome spa guests. The immigrant German Doctor Alexander Spengler established a convalescent spa for lung patients, which mainly included extensive sleep on the Davos sun terraces and Veltliner wine. This cure helped Davos to become famous worldwide, and in 1924 Thomas Mann’s novel «The Magic Mountain» also made the place immortal in literary terms.

Davos is the clear front-runner in the global meeting market in the mountains, because it has a rich tradition, is the leading congress center in the Alps and hosts the World Economic Forum (WEF), an event with a pronounced international appeal. But Davos is much more than just a conference city: the town is home to a number of renowned research stations such as the AO Foundation, the WSL Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research (SLF), the Observatory and World Radiation Center (PMOD/WRC), the Swiss Institute for Allergy and Asthma Research (SIAF) and a large number of specialized clinics and hospitals.

At the same time, Davos is a city of energy, education and knowledge, nestled in a natural environment, 1560 m above sea level, making up the world-renowned «Spirit of Davos».
